Giving to a Charity to Build Water Wells
In Islam, charity is an especially important and virtuous act that is encouraged to do regularly. There are several forms of charity, such as Zakat, which is compulsory for every able Muslim, as well as Sadaqah and Lillah, which are voluntary acts of charity. Charity does not always have to be in the form of financial payments; it could simply be smiling at someone, although your donations to charity greatly help those suffering around the world!
“A charity is due for every joint in each person on every day the sun comes up: to act justly between two people is a charity; to help a man with his mount, lifting him onto it or hoisting up his belongings onto it, is a charity; a good word is a charity; and removing a harmful thing from the road is a charity.” (Al-Bukhari, Muslim)
Sadaqah Jariyah
Sadaqah Jariyah refers to acts of charity that have ongoing and everlasting rewards. There are many acts that can be acts of Sadaqah Jariyah, and these hold immense rewards. For example:
- Donating a wheelchair to a hospital – for every person who uses it, you get the reward.
- Donating a Qur’an to someone – every time they read from it, you will get the reward.
- Gifting a hijab to a Muslim woman – every time she wears it, you will receive the reward.
- Raising pious children who go on to help others – for their actions, you will be rewarded.
- Building a water well – for every person or animal who drinks from it, you get the reward for it.
Through the actions and teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), we can see the importance of charity and the benefits of it for us in this life and the next. Muhammad, upon him, be peace, said: “When a man dies, his deeds come to an end except for three things: Sadaqah Jariyah (ceaseless charity); a knowledge which is beneficial, or a virtuous descendant who prays for him (for the deceased).” (Muslim)
Water Well Charity
By building a water well or water pump or donating towards one, you can receive rewards for every person who drinks from it.
Water pump as a charity is perhaps one of the best forms of charity one can give. It quenches the thirst of the thirsty and helps those around the world suffering from drought. When others are suffering, we should feel a sense of responsibility to ease their pain, as shown by the sayings and teachings of the Prophet (PBUH): “The believers are like one body in their mutual love and affection: if one limb is injured, the rest responds with sleeplessness and fever.”
Some of the places where water pumps are needed are Pakistan and Gaza, where children, orphans, widows and families are fighting for their lives due to drinking dirty and contaminated water. Every two minutes, a child dies from a water-related disease, but this can be prevented with your donations through our water pump charity.
As Muslims, we should strive to and want to help others who are struggling, as seen in the following hadith: “You will not believe until you love for your brother what you love for yourself.”
